The first Urbanist walking tour of 2016 will be heading to Pike Place Market, the oldest continually operating truly public market in North America. Join urbanist and staff contributor Ryan Packer on a trip through the market. Packer is well versed in Pike Place History as a board member and tour guide with Friends of the Market, the Market’s volunteer stewardship organization.

On the tour we will delve into how Pike Place intersects with urbanist issues including:

  • The role of public marketplaces in cities
  • The history of our market specifically as a tool for maintaining equity
  • Pike Place’s role in Seattle history at large
  • The evolution of pedestrian spaces in Seattle and elsewhere
  • Pike Place’s future expansion plans and how they intersect with the new Seattle waterfront as envisioned

This walking tour will take place this Saturday, March 12, starting at 10 a.m. We will meet at the main bend of the Pike Place “elbow” underneath the main market sign next to Rachel the bronze pig statue. Tickets are $10 and the proceeds will go towards keeping The Urbanist up and running.

The Urbanist was founded in 2014 to examine and influence urban policies. We believe cities provide unique opportunities for addressing many of the most challenging social, environmental, and economic problems. We serve as a resource for promoting and disseminating ideas, creating community, increasing political participation, and improving the places we live.
