Join The Urbanist for May Eastside Tours and Socials

The Urbanist is hosting two tours on the Eastside this month, one in Redmond led by Redmond Mayor Angela Birney, and a biking tour in Kirkland, led by city planning director Adam Weinstein. Both will explore transit-oriented development, with the Redmond tour focusing on the 2 Line and Kirkland focusing on the Cross Kirkland Corridor, a former railroad that was converted to a recreational trail.

Beyond the events The Urbanist is hosting, the second annual Seattle Super Saunter is set for May 16th. Walk from the northernmost point to the southernmost point of Seattle and get to know your city like never before.

May 9th Redmond Walking Tour with Mayor Angela Birney

  • What: A walking tour of the Overlake and Downtown neighborhoods of Redmond, led by Redmond Mayor Angela Birney and City planning staff. We will begin at the Overlake Station and end at Downtown Redmond, where attendees are welcome to disperse or gather for lunch. Bring your ORCA card to pay light rail fares or buy a ticket at the station. Space is limited, so RSVP soon if you intend to attend.
  • Where: Overlake Village Station.

May 17th Kirkland Biking Tour

  • What: Join The Urbanist and Eastrail Partners for a biking tour of the Cross Kirkland Corridor (CKC) led by Kirkland City planner Adam Weinstein. The tour will be focused on the history of the trail as well as the development efforts surrounding it. After the tour we will stop at Chainline Station for food and mingling. This is a biking tour and you will need a bike to complete it. The ride itself is easy and accessible to beginners, and takes place almost entirely on the protected trail.
  • Where: Begins at the intersection of 108th Avenue and the CKC ends in Totem Lake.
  • When: 11 am - 1 pm, Sunday, May 17th.

May 21st Seattle Urbanist Social

  • What: A monthly social gathering of urbanists from across Seattle. Meet like-minded people, hear about how to get more involved in organizing locally, and talk about the latest urbanist news.

Seattle Growth Plan Tabling

Join the Complete Communities Coalition (CCC) for one of our many tabling opportunities in May! The CCC is going across the city to farmers markets in Capitol Hill, Columbia City, West Seattle, and the U District to spread awareness of and encourage engagement with Seattle's Comprehensive Plan, which charts Seattle's next two decades of growth.

May 1st Complete Streets Tour w/ Complete Streets Bellevue

  • What: Join Complete Streets Bellevue, Bellevue City Councilmembers, and City of Bellevue staff on a mile-long walking tour of 108th Ave NE and 130th Ave NE! In recent years, these two streets have received significant upgrades to add infrastructure for people walking, biking, and rolling while making the corridors safer for everyone. Nestled in two of Bellevue’s rapidly-growing neighborhoods (Downtown and BelRed), these streets were designed using best practices and complete streets principles to become streets where everyone β€” walkers, bikers, transit users, and drivers β€” can get where they’re going quickly and safely.

May 16th Seattle Super Saunter

  • What: The Seattle Super Saunter is a walk from the northernmost point of Seattle to the southernmost, and takes place on May 16th. Starting at the Shoreline South/148th St light rail station and ending near Garden of Gethsemane church in South Seattle, the goal of the event is to encourage folks to walk, foster community, and appreciate the city of Seattle. Although folks are welcome to join the group at 8am that will walk a 24-mile route through Seattle, folks are encouraged to get from the start to the end however they like. All are welcome and folks can join for 1 mile or 20+ of this free event.

Hundreds Turn Out for Save Ballard Rail March
While on Sound Transit’s chopping block, the Ballard and Interbay neighborhoods made it clear at a 300-strong rally and four-mile march Sunday they are not going down without a fight. Advocates wants to see all light rail projects promised in ST3 built.
