The era of any Democrat will do is over. We see that in the groundbreaking wins of progressive challengers across the country, like that of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Congresswomen-elect Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier, Melat Kiros, Congressman-elect Brad Lander, and Mayor-elect Janeese Lewis George.
What all of these winning candidates had in common was a vision of an affordable future, a commitment to accountable government that materially delivers for working people, and the resounding rejection of corporate influence over local politics. They also all had the community organizing chops to build a grassroots movement that, against all odds, beat out powerful incumbents and career politicians.
We have all of that in the candidate we back for Washington State Senate in 43rd Legislative District, the most progressive district in the state: Hannah Sabio-Howell. And as two of the progressive leaders who all live in, vote in, and represent this district, we want to say loud and clear that we need Hannah on the team, fighting alongside us from Seattle to Olympia for the affordable future we were all elected to make possible.
Hannah is a proven leader and seasoned strategist in our community. She is a forceful champion for a more just, equitable, and progressive Washington who we have worked alongside for nearly a decade. We trust her and we back her for a reason.
Hannah has undeniable legislative experience. She worked for years in the state House of Representatives as a legislative aide and in the state Senate as a communications specialist, where she worked on successful efforts to tax the rich like the capital gains tax, make healthcare more affordable with an expansion of postpartum Medicaid, and bring everyday people into the legislative process by building transparency and accessibility into government communications. There, she also helped pave a path to the historic unionization of Washington’s legislative staff, organizing with her coworkers to end their exclusion from collective bargaining rights and negotiate fair wages and workplaces in a high-stress, high-impact work environment.
Hannah then went on to be a leader in a broad labor coalition that includes domestic workers, service and gig workers, and farm workers across the state, where she helped build the grassroots movement that won the historic Washington Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. She has organized shoulder-to-shoulder with food delivery gig workers to take on giant corporations like DoorDash, and won higher wages. She has been a key part of redefining what fair workplaces look like and what all workers deserve, all while standing alongside workers and other organizers to take on powerful and wealthy corporate interests.
We have worked with Hannah to put working people at the center of the solutions to the challenges we face – skyrocketing rent, childcare that costs as much as college tuition, a K-12 system that is collapsing – and we know we need her with us to keep building toward something better.
We need principled, focused, and experienced progressive fighters to move the needle on taxing ultra-wealthy corporations and individuals, lowering regressive taxes like sales taxes that working people disproportionately shoulder, and investing in visionary safety net programs like universal healthcare and universal childcare.
Re-electing the status quo won’t get us there. It’s time for a change.
We are leaders who envision an affordable and thriving future for our neighbors in Seattle and across Washington. We are also voters in the 43rd district. We want Hannah on the team, not just because change is overdue, but because she’s the person we trust and need to fight for that change alongside us.
